On May 2 1973, Black Panther activist Assata Olugbala Shakur (fsn) Joanne Deborah Chesimard, was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and then charged with murder of a police officer. Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979 and moving to Cuba.
There is a legal definition for terrorism. The United States Patriot Act describes what actions can be deemed as acts of terrorism. None of these definitions match with crimes of which Assata Shakur is accused. However, The FBI has placed Assata Shakur on The Top Ten Most Wanted Terrorists list. I addition to that they have doubled the previous 1 million dollar reward for assisting in her capture.
In fact, the FBI’s own recent actions taken against Assata Shakur more closely resembles the definition of terrorism in which criminal acts are committed with the intent of provoking a state of terror in the general public. It is speculated that this recent increased interest in Shakur comes at an ideal time. With the death of Osama Bin Laden and the recent Boston Marathon bombings, it is an ideal time to gain public approval for the assassination of another terrorist. Of course, they had to add her to the list first. We have seen this fear mongering all too clearly before.
After 9/11 the government used the public’s fear to justify wire-tapping, excessive invasion of civilian privacy and a number of other injustices. When Bin Laden was captured the government used our fear to justify the bloodlust that resulted in his death. Now again, fear is the weapon of mass destruction being used to blind us to the injustice of our government.
By increasing the bounty on Shakur, the FBI seeks to incite what would be the illegal pursuit and kidnapping of Shakur, who is a current political refugee receiving government granted asylum by Cuba. By placing Shakur on the Most Wanted Terrorists list they can justify killing her on spot or justify how she didn’t make it back to prison alive.
The Daily News recently reported an extremely sensational coberage of the reemt actions taken against Shakur. They declare her as a serial thief and cop killer who “executed” four officers with their own weapons. With a wonderful huge picture of the uniformed officer that she is accused of killing.
This is reminiscent of the struggles for which Assata Shakur used her activism to protest. The term in her time was “communist.” That was the propaganda used to paint individualsmas enemies of the state that could be slaughtered without reproach. With the changes in the current social climate: racism, reverse racism, protests to affirmative action and social welfare programs it is frightening to see this happening. It is the calm before the storm and if the American people do nothing to stop it, the United States will regress or worse evolve into a wholly different creature of hate and oppression.
